The case against Sharif dates back to the Panama Papers in 2016

The case against Sharif dates back to the Panama Papers in 2016

Pakistan's ruling party has nominated the younger brother of the ousted prime minister as the country's next leader, after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the country's supreme court on Friday after corruption allegations.

Pakistan's ruling party reportedly intends to appoint the brother of just ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as his successor and its nominee to contest the 2018 general elections.

Speculation is rife, however, that Nawaz has suggested his brother and Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif be the party's contender for the post.

For the interim period of 45 days, Mr. Abbasi will fill in his slot.

Sharif was removed from office on Friday on grounds that he did not declare his role in a company based in the United Arab Emirates, from which he was paid a salary, in a 2013 wealth declaration made before running for parliament.

Parliamentary elections are due in Pakistan next year and Sharif's party is hopeful for a resounding victory despite the fact that the Sharif family will continue to be investigated by the National Accountability Bureau.

Pakistan's former military dictator Gen Pervez Musharraf, congratulated the nation on the court's decision.

Hungarian GP: 'Scared, nervous, anxious' di Resta impresses on F1 return
Paul di Resta was thrown into the "deepest of deep ends" at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday and emerged to universal acclaim. Paul Di Resta turned up to the Hungaroring on Saturday morning, expecting to be in the Sky Sports commentary box.

The decision came following Nawaz Sharif's resignation as Prime Minister of the country on 28 July 2017. In 2012 then Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani was disqualified over contempt of court charges for refusing to reopen a corruption case against the sitting president Asif Ali Zardari. At the same time we laud the executive's respect for the judiciary in accepting the verdict of the court and avoiding a potentially politically destabilising situation had Sharif chosen not to accept the ruling.

The ouster of Nawaz was politically controversial, with opposition figures celebrating publicly in the capital city of Islamabad, handing out candy in the streets.

"I was not expecting what happened to me yesterday", he said.

The name of Shehbaz was announced during a high-level PML-N meeting.

It is notable that not a single Prime Minister in Pakistan has been allowed to complete his or her tenure since the country's inception 70 years ago.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Election Commission confirmed that a new vote would be held in Nawaz Sharif's electoral constituency.

Investigators, including members of the country's two top spy agencies - the Inter-Services Intelligence and the Military Intelligence - had questioned Sharif's children, his son-in-law, Shehbaz Sharif, as well as two close aides.
