Russian Federation orders United States to reduce diplomatic staff

In a statement from its Foreign Ministry, Russia said the US must reduce its diplomatic and technical staff to match the number of Russian staff working in America by September 1.

President Donald Trump has planned to sign a bill approved by Congress which will impose new sanctions on Russian Federation, the White House announced.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also said that Moscow reserved the right for additional restrictive measures, which could have an impact on Washington's interests, as part of reciprocal steps to United States recent policies. "Ambassador Tefft expressed his strong disappointment and protest". Reports of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election have put a damper on hopes for better ties that the Kremlin pinned on Trump's presidency.

Russia's response mirrors moves by outgoing President Barack Obama last December to expel 35 Russian diplomats and shut down two Russian estates in the U.S.

"The latest events confirm that certain circles in the USA are fixated on Russophobia and open confrontation with our country", according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The U.S. embassy in Moscow and the State Department both declined to say.

It was not immediately clear how many US diplomats and other workers would be forced to leave either the country or their posts, but the Interfax news agency cited an informed source as saying "hundreds" of people would be affected.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking ahead of the Senate vote, accused US lawmakers of 'insolence' and promised retaliation if the sanctions become law", as NPR's Scott Neuman reported Thursday.

They said practicalities were of the "greatest importance" but that Charlie's parents had proposed no clear plan. After Tuesday's hearing, the High Court would decide whether Charlie would be sent home with his parents.

Trump now faces an even tougher decision.

Russian Federation could look at imposing economic counter-sanctions against the United States, the former official said, saying he thought that retaliation in Ukraine or Syria was less likely because it was more likely to lead to a U.S. counter response.

The outgoing Obama administration seized two Russian diplomatic compounds - one in NY and another in Maryland - at the same time as it expelled the Russian diplomats in December.

Germany's foreign minister says his country won't accept new USA sanctions against Russian Federation being applied to European companies but is underlining Berlin's hopes of coordinating policy toward Moscow.

President Vladimir Putin initially held off from retaliating, saying he would wait to see how Trump reacted after he came into the White House.

The European Union has also threatened to retaliate against new USA sanctions on Russia, saying they would harm the bloc's energy security by targeting projects including a planned new pipeline to bring Russian natural gas to northern Europe.

It also said it would seize a Moscow compound used by USA diplomats as well as a United States diplomatic warehouse.

Gabriel said in a statement: "It remains the case that we will in no way accept an extraterritorial application of these USA sanctions against European companies".
