Charlie Gard will be moved to hospice for final hours: Judge

His loving parents Chris Gard, 32, and Connie Yates, 31, took him home in Bedfont, west London, to celebrate the birth of their first child.

Connie Yates and Chris Gard on Monday ended their five-month legal battle to have him moved from Great Ormond Street hospital and taken to the U.S. for experimental treatment, after his condition deteriorated. They then fought to have him taken home, having said it was their "last wish" for Charlie to die at home.

Greg Burke, director of the Vatican press office, said in a July 24 statement that Pope Francis, who had taken a personal interest in the case, "is praying for Charlie and his parents and feels especially close to them at this time of enormous suffering".

On Thursday, Charlie was moved transferred to a hospice, where he was taken off life support. Charlie's parents wanted to take him home to die.

Following news of the boy's death, Pope Francis, who supported the campaign, tweeted: "I entrust little Charlie to the Father and pray for his parents and all those who loved him".

"British law allows doctors to override the wishes of parents in treatment decisions if it's in the child's best interest", NPR's Joanna Kakissis reported.

3 May: Charlie's parents ask three court of appeal judges to consider the case.

A judge had given the parents until noon to reach an agreement with Great Ormond Street Hospital about spending more time in a hospice, but no compromise was reached so a judge ruled that Charlie's artificial ventilation should be turned off.

In a July 24 statement that brought their legal odyssey to a close, Chris Gard and Connie Yates declared, "Mummy and Daddy love you so much, Charlie".

Some were wearing white and gray hooded sweat shirts, with hoods or umbrellas in some cases obscuring their faces. Cruise passengers told KSTU they heard the couple fighting around 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

On Friday night, the hospital offered its condolences to Charlie's family.

Eleven-month-old Charlie Gard, whose short life captured the hearts of the world, has died a week before his first birthday.

Charlie's parents said that they intend on starting a foundation in their son's honor to assist people in similar situations.

The High Court order says Charlie will continue to be treated in hospital for a "period of time" before being moved to the hospice, which can not be named for legal reasons. The hospital said its own doctors and independent medical experts agreed the treatment "would prolong Charlie's suffering".

Charlie's parents added they believed their son might have been saved if experimental therapy had been tried sooner.

The intervention of two of the world's most powerful men made the case a talking point for the planet.

Adding: "We must all hug our tiny ones a little tighter tonight and be grateful for our handsome children".

Of further concern, the battle between Charlie's parents and his physicians exploded into public view just as the British Medical Association (BMA), the nation's largest doctors' union, endorsed abortion on demand.

The High Court on Wednesday ruled that 11-month-old Charlie would be transferred to a hospice where he would be taken off the life support system.

The boy's parents fought a lengthy court battle until his final days.
