Ghatkopar building collapse

At least 12 people were killed when a four-story building collapsed in a suburb of the Indian metropolis of Mumbai Tuesday morning, local authorities said. "The rescue work is going on a war-footing", BMC fire brigade department chief P S Rahangdale said. "The Fire Brigade and civic rescue workers were immediately pressed into service", an officer with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said.

As per the sources, a nursing home was being run on the ground floor of the building and a middle aged woman became the first victim of the incident.

At least 24 people were killed in May when a wall collapsed at a wedding. The families who have their beloved ones inside the building are seeking for help. "I saw parts of the building collapse", an eyewitness was quoted as saying by PTI.

Locals also speculate that the building, which is allegedly owned by Shiv Sena leader Sunil Shitap, caved in due to renovation work being held by in the complex by the leader. The fact that the nursing home on the ground floor was not in operation may have also saved several lives.

IANS reports that the 40-year-old building was on BMC's list of "dangerous buildings".
