Kerala Congress legislator arrested for allegedly raping 51-year-old woman

Vincent was arrested after being questioned at the Thiruvananthapuram MLA hostel on Saturday. Following the complaint, Vincent alleged that there was a "political conspiracy" behind the allegation against him and filed a complaint with police, demanding a detailed probe into the matter. The city magistrate had recorded the victim's statement, sources said.

Neyyattinkara DySP B Harikumar taking Kovalam MLA M Vincent (left) to Neyyattinkara General hospital for medical examination from Peroorkada police club, after recording the arrest for allegedly raping a 51-year-old housewife.

Earlier, Vincent had sought anticipatory bail at a local court; the court was scheduled to hear his plea on Monday.

The state Congress leadership has been guarded in statements about the controversy even as woman leaders of the party demand resignation of the MLA.

After examining the call records, the police have found that Vincent rang up the woman more than 900 times in the last five months. Rape and assault charges were added after SIT chief Ajeetha Begum recorded her statement at the hospital. A Congress MLA, Vincent defeated MLA Jameela Prakasham of the Janatha Dal (Secular) in the 2016 May Assembly Election.

However, the MLA alleged that a local CPI (M) leader was present at the woman's house when she attempted suicide and that she was brought to the hospital in his vehicle.

A police team questioned Vincent for almost four hours at the MLA hostel before arresting him.

On Wednesday afternoon, a woman from Balaramapuram, Kerala attempted suicide by overdosing on blood pressure tablets.

It is being reported that the woman had attempted suicide as Vincent had made advances at her, harassing her physically and mentally.

It was then that the MLA had a non-consensual relation with the woman where she was allegedly repeatedly sexually abused at her house.

Leader of opposition and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said the legislator has told the party that he is innocent and is ready to face any probe.

Thiruvananthapuram district CPI-M secretary Anavoor Nagappan told the media that Vincent should quit in the wake of the serious charges against him.
