Branden Grace shot the first-ever 62 in a major.

"I had no idea 62 was the lowest ever", Grace said after shooting 8 under at defenseless Royal Birkdale.

He finished with three straight pars to move to 3 under for the tournament. Miller, who won the British Open at Birkdale in 1976, was in the NBC booth on Saturday to call Grace's gem.

Jordan Spieth led at the halfway stage at six-under and he quickly improved to -7 for the championship with a birdie at the 3rd. He was concentrating on saving par to preserve his bogey-free round.

There is nothing wrong with low scores in majors - everyone likes birdies - but the four majors are supposed to test pros unlike the regular events, and they have not been doing so in recent years.

Spieth and Matt Kuchar did not tee off until shortly before 4 p.m.at Royal Birkdale.

A birdie at the first set him on his way and four more by the turn gave him an outward 29.

Even when speaking at his press conference, Grace recognised that last year's U.S. Open victor was out on the course, threatening his new milestone - and Johnson knew he had a chance too.

LoC skirmishes intensify: Two army soldiers killed in Pak firing
There has a rise in incidents where Pakistan is targeting the civilians in Poonch and Nowshera sector for some time now. The 24-year-old sepoy hailed from Talwandi in Moga district of Punjab and leaves behind his parents, he said.

But he did, sinking a 2-footer on the final hole to break the former mark of 63 held by several players.

"It was a special round from the start and when you get it going you just want to make even more birdies".

The South African said he might have been helped by being unaware of the fact that he was in with a chance of making history. "But that makes it even sweeter", Grace said. But, it took just one day for him to push himself right back into content, and he did so in record-breaking fashion.

Branden Grace has made major championship history. Grace will be in position to make some noise on Sunday if he can put together another impressive round.

The 29-year-old from Pretoria, ranked 35th in the world, has previously had four top-five finishes at majors, including a third place at the PGA Championship in 2015.

He had his best friend, Paul, on his bag and said the experience was "a bit surreal".

The first weekend score is in the books at the British Open - and it's a good one.
