Several hundred people could be seen praying outside two different entrances to the site on Monday.

On Friday, a deadly attack occurred on the outskirts of the holy site, where three Palestinian gunmen shot dead two Israeli policemen who were in turn, killed by security forces. They have called for a "day of rage" to be held on Friday (21 July).

Border police and military personnel stood guard in the area to ensure that the prayer didn't evolve into a violent demonstration. Many Muslim worshipers have refused to pass through the detectors and have instead prayed outside the gate.

It was for the first time in the past 50 years that Israel closed the compound, which is Islam's third holiest site.

The site reopened Sunday, but with metal detectors at entrances, prompting the Palestinian boycott over alleged Israeli efforts to expand their control over the sensitive site. "He was severely wounded and died at the scene", the military spokesperson was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

"We want Trump to be more responsible and not to go ahead with his agenda to turn Jerusalem as Israel's capital", he said.

According to a statement issued by the group, Israeli security forces made "unilateral decisions" about access to the compound without the participation of the Waqf, establishing "a clear change to the status quo".

Schaefer also mentioned the ongoing detention of German reporter Mesale Tolu, who has been in Turkish custody since April. So far this year, bookings from Germany have accounted for about 10 percent of Turkey's tourists.

Israel insists it has no intention of changing the status quo, and says metal detectors are widely used to secure holy sites around the world.

Israeli authorities said the closure was necessary to carry out security checks.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad have also called for protests in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Both the Israelis and the Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital.

Returning to Israel on Thursday from a visit to Hungary, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rushed straight from the airport to the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv to meet his security chiefs in a bid to defuse mounting Muslim anger over metal detectors on the Temple Mount.

Numerous clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian protesters have taken place near the Temple Mount this week. And the Waqf stayed away (and urged other Muslims to do the same). Two instances of open Jewish prayer prompted police to remove and detain visitors, according to Arutz Sheva 7.

The violence had greatly subsided in recent months.
