Google's courageous new friendless feed

Google has taken steps to prevent another massive phishing attack

Launching today in the United States, and internationally in the coming weeks, the Google app for iOS now includes a personalized feed filled with things like news stories, live sports highlights, and suggested videos, all of which are merged in the feed with other data we've come to expect from the Google app such as local weather, relevant travel info, and more. But not anymore as Google has today announced a critical update to the Play Store that will add a section called "Editorial Pages".

If you don't like the topic of a card Google posted to your feed, you can simply press the three vertical dots in the top right corner and select "Not interested". But the underlying technology that pulled data from your Google app ecosystem had been wisely repurposed as signals about the news and entertainment you desire.

Google is following in Facebook's footsteps, with plans to redesign its popular search page on mobile phones so that you'll get something similar to the social media site's news feed. "And when available, you'll be able to fact check and see other relevant information to help get a more holistic understanding of the topics in your feed". "You'll spend less time and energy trying to keep up with your interests and more time enjoying and cultivating them", Google says. Another new feed feature is the ability to follow topics yourself.

Al Pacino as Joe Paterno in Barry Levinson's HBO Film
Levinson and Pacino previously collaborated on HBO's 2010 Jack Kevorkian biopic You Don't Know Jack and 2014's The Humbling . The untitled movie, which is in production , is being directed by Barry Levinson .

Coupled with the automatic personalization performed behind the scene, these features may just enable Google to draw some traffic away from Facebook Inc.'s iconic news feed. Google's personalized take on the news feed will make it easier for users to find stories of interest. Google's new feed will hopefully do a better job. It's also an acknowledgment that Facebook's News Feed is one of the most addictive ways to consume digital information on smartphones. Using the example given, you'll see more content about photography if you're an enthusiast while seeing less content about fitness if you're just causally into it. In the same way as Facebook, Google will surface articles from across the web and present them in a single scrolling screen. Years ago, Google Senior Product Manager Karen Corby geeked out on "The Glass Castle", a 2005 memoir by Jeannette Walls.

The search giant's machine learning algorithm learns from a user's search history as well as information from Google Maps data, Gmail, and YouTube searches to anticipate topics that are most important to the user, and will display stories or videos by topics on cards.

Yes, that means Google.com's infamously blank webpage will now be filled with information curated to whichever user is logged in to their Google account, according to TechCrunch.
