Notorious jewel thief Doris Payne was arrested Monday for allegedly shoplifting at an Atlanta-area Walmart, NBC News reported.

The police report details that employees witnessed Payne nab electronics, groceries and items from the pharmacy, placing some items in her cart and others in her purse and Walmart shopping bag.

Payne was arrested and taken to Chamblee jail on charges of theft by shoplifting, then later released after posting bail.

"Thieving was the farthest thing from my mind", she told NBC News by phone on Tuesday.

Doris Payne was arrested at the store in DeKalb County following the theft of items worth $86.22, according to WSB. The items were returned to Walmart.

Her five-decade spree and 20-some arrests in countries around the world, including Greece, France, Britain and Switzerland, have made her something of a celebrity among thieves.

When asked about her exploits in an interview with The Associated Press earlier this year, she said simply: "I was a thief".

The West Virginia born woman was the subject of a documentary called "The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne", which premiered on Netflix in 2013. Her arrest record is longer than she can remember.
