Could Kirk Cousins wind up with Vikings in 2018?

NFL Rumors: Kirk Cousins, Le'Veon Bell Likely To Play On The Franchise Tag And Teddy Bridgewater Injury Update

Kirk Cousins will play the 2017 season under the franchise tag, after the deadline to sign a long-term deal passed at 4:00pm on Monday.

It has always been expected that Cousins would wind up playing out the franchise tag for a second straight year - something no National Football League quarterback has ever done.

Washington will an opportunity to tag Cousins for a third season in 2018-2019 for approximately $35 million or transition tag him for about $28 million once beginning.

In a video posted on Washington's website, team President Bruce Allen said that team offered Cousins the largest guaranteed contract for a quarterback in National Football League history at $53 million but the team had not received any offer from Cousins' agent this year.

Monday afternoon's deadline came and went without a long-term deal for Kirk Cousins with the Washington Redskins, as expected.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins have failed to agree on a long-term contract yet again and it seems that this could very well be his final season with the team. Washington may want to take a cue from its quarterback. The Redskins play in a tough division with two returning playoff teams that are both superior to them personnel-wise and, I'd argue, coaching wise too.

Once again, Cousins will play a year under the franchise tag.

Plus, with the franchise tag already assigned, there was also no reason to do a deal in May until Cousins saw if Derek Carr was rewarded a contract extension and the numbers that came with it. Under that scenario, Cousins would be unable to negotiate with any other teams.

Whether you believe Cousins is worth $20M, or $25M, or even $30M a year, there are teams out there who do.

For now, Cousins is the Redskins quarterback. Cousins also said owner Dan Snyder has been positive with him throughout the offseason.

The difference is why someone like portly Pablo Sandoval gets cut after two-plus abysmal seasons in Boston and still gets every penny of his $95 million deal while Adalius Thomas gets cut by the Patriots, after doing more than Pablo ever thought of and getting squat when he left, to use a financial euphemism that exists only in the NFL. The Redskins had publicly stated numerous times that they wanted Cousins here for the long term.

Some said the danger for Cousins is that he could be hurt playing the most violent team sport in existence and thus reduce his value in future negotiations or, in a worst case scenario, see his career end.

The statement from Allen has triggered a mixed reaction from Redskins fans who are discussing it beside office water coolers and on social media and; given the circumstances, this is understandable.

Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins said a long-term deal was "closer than people would think", but that he wasn't rushing into accepting the team's proposal or to counter.

Bell, 25, ran for 1,268 yards and seven touchdowns and caught another 75 passes in 12 games for Pittsburgh in 2016.

If Cousins indeed hits free agency next offseason, San Francisco will become a leading contender to sign him.

HOYER AND THE IN-HOUSE CANDIDATES Hoyer enters training camp as the starting quarterback.

Cousins long has been linked to the 49ers because of his connection with head coach Kyle Shanahan, who was Washington's offensive coordinator when Cousins was drafted in 2012 and who developed an affinity for his coach. Cousins said he needed more time, as the franchise has gone through many changes.

And if Hoyer flounders in 2017, attention will turn to Darnold or whoever the most highly-rated college prospect is at season's end.

How'd we get here?
