Turkey Marks 1 Year Since July 15 Coup Attempt Quashed

"Turkey marks the first anniversary of a failed military coup (July 15) against the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan".

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened today that his country would not ratify the Paris climate accord, speaking at the end of the G20 summit in Germany. "These are issues to discussed and decided at the National Security Council (MGK)", he stressed.

More than 50,000 people have been jailed pending trial and 150,000 state workers including teachers, judges and soldiers have been suspended or dismissed under emergency rule imposed in late July after the coup.

Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya, who is Family and Social Policies Minister, said Turkey's fight against terrorism was important not only for her country but for Europe and beyond as well.

A 250-mile "justice march" organized by opposition party leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu morphed into an unexpected rallying point for Mr. Erdogan's opponents. "We are comfortable", he said.

In the 12 months since then, a state of emergency had been in place across the country.

Another store closing in West Acres Mall
The retailer is working with Great American Group and Tiger Group to manage the closing sales for the stores it plans to shutter. As people shop online more, traditional retailers such as Gymboree and shopping malls in general have been hit hard.

Jul 15 has been declared an annual national holiday of "democracy and unity" and the authorities want people to see the foiling of the putsch as a historic victory of Turkish democracy.

Their detention raised alarm internationally, increasing fears that freedom of expression was being suppressed under Erdogan.

"We are talking about a structure (going back) more than 40 years, hence it is not possible to cleanse it in one day".

He said that the prospect of being a full union member was "not indispensable for us" and attacked EU officials for "wasting our time".

Gulen called for an independent global investigation of the coup attempt, saying "hundreds of thousands" of innocent Turks had been punished simply for suspected links to him.

Some Turks believe the coup attempt was secretly orchestrated by Mr. Erdogan himself, even though there is no evidence.
