Awarding Nobel to Liu was blasphemy: Beijing

World reacts with praise, sadness to Liu death

Friends of China's Nobel Peace Prize-winning dissident Liu Xiaobo, who died of liver cancer in custody, said on Friday they are still unable to contact his widow, Liu Xia, and that ensuring her freedom is now a top priority.

Liu, who died July 13 at age 61, received the Nobel for what the award committee called his "long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights".

"I think it is ill-mannered and quite provocative that the prime minister uses words such as "deep grief" when she heard about Liu Xiaobo's death", said Eide, who is standing as a candidate with the Socialist Left Party at this year's general election.

"As we stand here today we don't know if Xi is going to allow Dr. Liu to come to freedom, to live out his last days in peace, and to receive the Nobel peace prize that he was so justly awarded", he said.

Officials announced Liu's terminal liver cancer last month, and moved him to a hospital in Shenyang under high security but refused to release him for treatment overseas.

While in prison, Liu was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer, which led to multiple organ failure and ultimately his death. "I call on the Chinese government to release Liu Xia from house arrest and allow her to depart China, according to her wishes", he said.

Charter 08, a manifesto he helped draft calling for political change in China in 2008, was initially signed by over 350 Chinese intellectuals and human rights activists.

Geng said China has lodged formal protests with the United States, Germany and the United Nations, among others. Ai Weiwei, the Chinese dissident artist now living in Berlin, told the BBC yesterday: "It still comes as a big shock. because he has been such a symbol for China's human rights or democratic movement".

His supporters and foreign governments had urged China to allow him to receive treatment overseas, but Chinese authorities insisted he was receiving the best care possible for a disease that had spread throughout his body.

Some of the global reaction to Liu's death was muted, highlighting China's emergence as an economic and diplomatic superpower.

Liu Xia, a poet, is said to be suffering from depression after spending years under house arrest and heavy surveillance.

"I'm saddened. It's a huge shock for me", Liu, who is not related to the laureate, said.

The government would not allow Xiaobo to seek medical treatment outside of China.

China punished Norway by suspending political and economic ties - including salmon imports from Norway - until past year, when Oslo promised to respect "China's core interests and major concerns".

US President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron were among Western leaders offering praise for Mr Liu.

What was it that made the Chinese leadership want Liu behind bars?

At the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo in 2010 he was represented by an empty chair. "It's a persecution, it's a violation of human rights", she said.

Nicolas Benquelin, the director of the Asian program at Amnesty International said his treatment showed China was still a brutal regime.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Johnston in Beijing on Thursday, urging both countries to expand cooperation in such areas as trade, law enforcement, technology and culture, and launch negotiations on a free trade agreement at an early date, reported the official Chinese Xinhua agency, which had no mention of Liu's passing.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told reporters Wednesday that Liu, who is suffering from advanced liver cancer, has asked to leave with his wife for treatment overseas.
