Earlier, the USA embassy refused to issue visa for Afghan girls, reportedly fearing that they may overstay or may refuse to return home. As Forbes reported, even though Afghanistan is not one of the countries mentioned in Trump's partially reinstated travel ban, the rate of visas approved from the country in recent months have been low.

Following the change, the State Department said it worked with the Department of Homeland Security to remedy the situation.

The State Department and Homeland Security came up with several options, and the National Security Council ultimately chose to "parole" the team, allowing them to enter the USA for up to 10 days.

The girls had worked hard not only for the competition, but for just the chance to compete, twice traveling some 500 miles - through potentially unsafe areas - from their home in Herat to the USA embassy in Kabul as part of the application process.

However, the State Department granted them entry Wednesday after having denied them twice, according to a statement from the competition organizers.

A team of Afghan girls who were denied entry to the U.S.to compete in a robotics competition are now going to be allowed in, thanks to.

First Global, the organization putting on the competition, said that a team from the Gambia is also being allowed to join the event despite having previously been rejected.

"We just wanted to show the power and skills of Afghan girls to Americans". In what might be a surprise to some, it was President Trump, via his national security council, who urged the State Department to reconsider their initial decisions to bar the team from entry into the country, after he heard reports of the girls' struggle in the media.

Members of Afghan girls' team have said they are eager to put in display the robots made by them in the competition which will begin on Sunday in Washington.

The criticisms also fueled arguments that President Trump is seeking to ban Muslims from entering the country.

The stated goal for FIRST Global is to inspire youth around the world to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The girls will participate in the FIRST Global Challenge, an annual worldwide robotics competition created to "ignite a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among the more than two billion youths across the world", according to the organization's website.
