No official cause for the crash of the KC-130T aircraft on Monday has been determined. The Marines said Tuesday that the air tanker was based at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, New York, and headed to California. The names of those killed were being withheld until their families could be notified. Gen. Bradley S. James told reporters Wednesday in Itta Bena, Mississippi, according to the Florida-Times Union.

The crash of the KC-130 killed nine Marines from Newburgh, N.Y., and six Marines and a Navy Corpsman from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, Brig.

Greenwood Fire Chief Marcus Banks told the Greenwood Commonwealth that debris from the plane was scattered in a radius of about 5 miles (8 kilometers).

The Marine Corps said personal weapons and small-arms ammunition were aboard. As MPB's Alexis Ware reports the incident is the deadliest Marine crash in more than a decade.
