Mithali Raj Is Now The Leading Run Scorer In The World

Meg Lanning says her right shoulder will be in good enough shape to lead Australia against England

The highlight of the Indian innings was Mithali surpassing former England captain Charlotte Edwards aggregate of 5992 runs to become the highest run-getter in the history of womens ODI.

"We started well, but we have not been consistent with the way we wanted to play in the tournament", admitted Raj.

India captain Mithali Raj said better individual performances would be required against Australia after they were bowled out for 158 by South Africa, four players getting out for ducks.

"I don't think Mitahli Raj gets the credit she deserves at times", Edwards said.

Australia opted - as it has done throughout the tournament - to open with spin, and Lanning's decision paid off nearly immediately.

Earlier, she had achieved another record by scoring seven consecutive fifties in ODIs, again a first in women's ODI cricket.

Both started slowly with India taking 18 overs to reach 50, but they accelerated expertly in a 157-run partnership. She is often compared to Tendulkar of Women cricket for her achievements.

Mithali made her ODI debut against Ireland Women at Milton Keynes on June 26, 1999, where she scored 114 not out. She scored a match-winning century in the match.

Beth Mooney and Nicole Bolton had 44 dots in the Power Play compared to India's 47, but their confidence in keeping the scoreboard ticking set the platform for a push. At 34, Mithali knows the World Cup in England could well be her last big ICC tournament.

Shikha Pandey, who came back into the side against South Africa and took three wickets for 40 runs, said her team was aware of the precarious position they were in.

"Even for New Zealand, probably, it will be a do-or-die match".

"We really have to improve all over the pitch, especially producing more consistency from how we are bowling and fielding".
