King Felipe VI: Spain and United Kingdom 'profoundly intertwined'

Mr Rosindell looked on as King Felipe said in the traditional address to both Houses of Parliament that Britain and Spain have a long-shared history and have "frequently stood shoulder to shoulder" as friends, partners and allies, in the best interests of both nations. On Wednesday, Queen Letizia and King Felipe attended a formal welcoming at Horse Guards Parade in London.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh rolled out the red carpet to welcome the King and Queen of Spain as they kicked off their state visit to Britain today.

The backdrop to the visit is strained relations between Spain and the United Kingdom over the sovereignty of Gibraltar, which have come to the fore because of Brexit.

The visit was delayed twice, once while Spanish politicians formed a new government and again last month because Britain held a snap general election.

They will then visit Exeter college, where a professorship in Spanish is named after Felipe's great-grandfather, Alfonso XIII, and meet Spanish students and academics.

Spain earlier this year agreed to the EU's ruling on Brexit negotiations that "no agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom can be applied to the territory of Gibraltar without an agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom".

SSP Sajid Khan Mohmand martyred in Chaman blast
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing in Chaman, which is near the Afghan border town of Spin Boldak. Interior minister Chaudhry Nisar and Balochistan home minister Mir Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti also condemned the attack.

Britain's Ambassador to Madrid has said it's likely that King Felipe will bring up Gibraltar when he makes his speech at Westminster.

Felipe, 49, is expected to raise the thorny issue of Gibraltar during his stay this week.

With a population of around 30,000, Gibraltar was ceded to Britain by Spain under the treaty of Utrecht in 1713.

King Felipe, accompanied by Prince Philip, inspected the Guard of Honor (in this case, the 1st Battalion Irish Guards).

Security will be tight for the royal carriage procession along The Mall in what will be the first state visit to take place since the terror attacks in Manchester and London. The last such visit from Spain was made by King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia in 1986.
