She goes on to face Simona Halep, the Romanian second seed.

Halep defeated Belarus' and former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in straight sets 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 behind 19 winners and Azarenka's 32 unforced errors.

Simona Halep insists she doesn't care about her battle to clinch the World No 1 ranking because she would rather win Wimbledon.

The 26-year-old, who is now favourite to win the whole event, was forced to dig deep once again but came through 7-6 (7/3) 4-6 6-4 on Court One to become the first Briton to reach the last eight since Jo Durie back in 1984.

Garcia had beaten Konta, also in three sets, at Indian Wells in March but she is yet to beat a top-10 player at a Grand Slam and this time it was Konta's serve, and nerve, that came up trumps. Konta has mostly breezed other than the aforementioned match with Vekic. When Garcia had another set point, she appeared to hit it long, the ball was called out but then called in on review, to Konta's enormous frustration.

But Halep isn't going to let herself be distracted by thoughts of moving into first place because she would rather win a maiden Grand Slam title at the All England Club.

The former number 1, bidding to clinch her 29th top 5 win, the first since 2016 Miami, barely avoided the bagel before saving a match point and breaking to 2-5 with a clean volley, her 20th victor of the match.

"She has worked extremely hard on her tennis game, of her mental game".

"So I feel that I have more experience and I hope I will not think that much during the match". But again Konta showed her remarkable mettle and focus, as well as her power and consistency, to overcome a skilful opponent.

"It's very exciting", Konta said in her postmatch press conference.

"I'll try to go there on Sunday". But she remains resolutely low-key in her answers, fending off those questions in the same way she has every opponent in the Championships; that she's taking it one step at a time and still has a lot to learn.

On the grass, both players started to seem more relaxed during her service games in a muscular duel reaching its climax.
