U.S. taking game-by-game approach to Gold Cup

Brad Guzan sits down for a discussion about returning to MLS with Atlanta United, his time in the Premier League and more.

Given how lackluster the USA attack was on Saturday, Agudelo, Zardes and Morris could all find themselves ready to start when the team returns to action on Wednesday against Martinique. All told, the Americans have gone 30-1-3 since the tournament was revamped in 1991. Guadeloupe finished third at the 2007 Gold Cup. That was thanks to Los Canaleros in 2011.

Panama traditionally has been a hard Gold Cup foe for the Americans.

Like most nations, the U.S.is not using most of its top players in the 12-team tournament, preferring to test its junior varsity before World Cup qualifying resumes in September.

Many forget that Panama has made at least the semifinals in the last three Gold Cups, while making the final in 2013.

Aside from upstart Curacao, Costa Rica remains the real lone threat to spoil either the U.S.'s or Mexico's chances at the Gold Cup title.

"Panama's a good team", Guzan said. "I knew this wasn't going to be easy". They won the Copa Centroamericana as hosts back in January but haven't won a game since (though they've played four and lost only one). "But they've all been tough, physical battles, and that's what we expect again on Saturday".

Duplicating that effort will be hard this time due to a short-handed roster, but it's in the name of a bigger cause. U.S. will now attempt to gain psychological advantage over Los Canaleros by winning the Gold Cup clash, but that is not going to be an easy task.

The main Mexican side have only just returned from the Confederations Cup in Russian Federation so boss Juan Carlos Osorio will be taking a much changed squad across the border (the 2017 Gold Cup is hosted by the United States). Even those who didn't have standout games weren't bad. "They had long seasons plus the June World Cup qualifiers, so they needed a break and then they need to start their preseasons in July".

U.S. plans to test THAAD missile defenses
Haley added that if North Korea continues to be involved in these activities, it must be prepared to defend itself and its allies. The test was planned months before the July 4 launch that has increased concerns from the world towards Pyongyang.

"We didn't play well on the day", Bruce Arena said after the match.

First-half goals from Dejan Jakovic and Scott Arfield, who both netted at senior global level for the first time, appeared to have Canada in control of the Group A clash at Red Bull Arena.

"Kenny came here with a little bit of an injury and wasn't able to overcome it", Arena told reporters on Thursday.

Next up for the U.S.is a Wednesday match against Martinique in Tampa, Fla. It wasn't as if he was the only midfielder to underperform on Saturday-Dax McCarty turned in a lackluster showing as well. He played with determination on the attacking end, exemplified by the moves he showed against multiple Panamanian defenders in the build-up to the goal.

"I thought we didn't deal well with the pressure, especially in the midfield". The game is set to be a hard-fought clash with no clear victor and both teams motivated to get the three points.

"I see myself as being a good link between the younger players on the team and the older, more experienced, players", said the Islander. "I think that's a real positive for CONCACAF".

Elsewhere on Saturday it could pay to back the draw at 5/2 with bet365 when U.S. face Panama.

"They're a unsafe team", said defender Graham Zusi.
