Israel calls UNESCO 'anti-semitic' after Hebron named Palestinian Heritage Site

UNESCO declares West Bank shrine as Palestinian angering Israel

Israeli officials slammed UNESCO on Friday after it passed a Palestinian-backed resolution calling Hebron "Islamic" and designating its Old City, home of the biblical Tomb of the Patriarchs, as a Palestinian world heritage site in danger.

Emmanuel Nahshon, a spokesman for Israel's Foreign Ministry, called the motion "fake news".

Mr. Amro, founder of the Hebron-based Youth Against Settlements, is facing trial in an Israeli military court on a number of charges, some of which date back a number of years and have only recently been reactivated.

The move has been met with applause by Palestinians, and condemnation from Israel.

Other Israeli leaders called the committee's decision an attempt to promote lies to benefit Palestine. A few days prior, the World Heritage Committee passed a resolution denying Israeli claims to the Old City of Jerusalem.

The tomb has traded hands many times over the centuries, variously under the control of the Romans, Arab rulers, the Crusaders, the Ottomans, and the British.

"With its cultural and human heritage, this decision shows that Hebron is important to the entire world and not just Palestinians", Hamed said.

Hebron is located in the West Bank, about 30 kilometers south of Jerusalem, and is home to roughly 215,000 Palestinians and hundreds of Israeli settlers, according to the United Nations.

"Nothing is more disgraceful than UNESCO declaring the world's only Jewish state the "occupier" of the Western Wall and Jerusalem's Old City", said Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon.

China: India 'trampled' worldwide law, treaty in border standoff
Beijing says the atmosphere is not right for a formal or bilateral meeting between both the leaders-Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi . India is concerned about how much access the road would allow China's military at such a strategic point.

By conducting the vote today in a secret ballot, the current Chair of the Committee and those member states who voted for the resolution clearly demonstrated they understood the shameful nature of their action.

The site will also include the ancient Ibrahimi mosque which sits above the revered cave of the prophets, believed by Christians, Jews and Muslims to be the burial site of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and their wives.

Another moment of intrigue saw Hacohen take the floor after the vote, only to keep being interrupted by his cell phone.

"We praise this vote at UNESCO, which considers the Old City of Hebron and its heart, the Ibrahimi Mosque, as Palestinian cultural heritage", Abu Zneneh told CNN. "It represents an affront to history", Haley said in a statement.

But Alaa Shahin, from the Palestinian Hebron municipality, said the vote could help encourage tourism.

Even before Netanyahu's budget announcement, Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan signaled Israel would seek to further make its mark at the Hebron shrine, tweeting: "UNESCO will continue to adopt delusional decisions but history can not be erased. we must continue to manifest our right by building immediately in the Cave of the Patriarchs".

The Ibrahimi Mosque has always been a flashpoint of Zionist colonial violence.

"We are calling on the worldwide community and the Trump administration t0 pull out of UNESCO completely".

The UNESCO resolution characterized the site as facing danger, which directly contradicts facts on the ground. This time they've decided that the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron is a Palestinian site, meaning not a Jewish one and listed it as an endangered site.
