Kirkpatrick's death brings the total number of US casualties in Afghanistan for this year to seven.

US soldiers returned fire killing two militants. Hansen B. Kirkpatrick, 19.

"We will keep [Kirkpatrick's] family in our thoughts and prayers as we reflect on the sacrifice he and others have made to secure our freedoms and help make Afghanistan a better place", Army Gen. John Nicholson, the top USA commander in Afghanistan, said in a prepared statement.

The United States is considering sending thousands of additional USA troops to Afghanistan, after Gen. Nicholson requested the force increase to break what he called a "stalemate" in the war.
