After seeing his role at Manchester United diminish last season, it's been reported by ESPN FC that forward Wayne Rooney is considering a return to his childhood club of Everton during the current transfer window.

In a sensational development, Sportsmail understands Jose Mourinho is closing in on the biggest move of the summer and a world-record deal, eclipsing Paul Pogba's £89m return to Old Trafford past year.

Wayne Rooney could complete a free transfer return to Everton by the end of this week.

The report states that Rooney has been withdrawn from the Manchester United squad that's set to head stateside this weekend for a pre-season tour.

Rooney sensationally joined Manchester United back in 2004 in a £26.5m move, and went on to score 253 goals for the club in the 13 years spent at Old Trafford.

Mino Raiola represents Lukaku and United seem to hold the cards after three of his clients, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, made the move to Old Trafford last summer.

The 31-year-old is now set to call time on his illustrious United career.

Jose Mourinho progressively phased him out over the course of the season and, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic also departing the club this summer, United have lost two big names from their attack.

According to BBC Sport, there is increased momentum behind a deal to take Rooney back to Merseyside, and that has taken the form of face-to-face discussions between the two parties in London on Wednesday.

However it is believed no offers were forthcoming from America while he was unwilling to uproot his family for a move to China.

The Dutch manager has already splashed out upwards of £100m on players such as Sunderland's Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane of Burnley.
