Xi Says Challenges To Chinese Stability Are "Absolutely Impermissible"

Xi's warning came as pro and anti-Beijing protesters clashed amid the swearing of ceremony of Hong Kong's first female Chief Executive Leader Carrie Lam.Lam is being considered by critics as a China stooge in a city where HongKongers fears of Beijing's tightening grip on the city's autonomy and freedoms of almost eight million people.

While he said the central government was ready to talk to anyone regardless of their political views, Xi spent a significant part of his 30-minute speech warning against challenges to sovereignty and urging the city to improve its system to uphold national security, sovereignty and development interests.

Experts said that the statements given by Xi are the strongest yet and it shows that China is getting increasingly annoyed with pro-democracy supporters in Hong Kong.

Warned that security forces would be working overtime to stop crowds and banners from appearing on July 1, the 20th anniversary of Britain's handover of Hong Kong to China, the protesters made a decision to turn the tables by making this official object disappear - if only briefly.

"In the next five days, I'll be speaking to my team and making sure I do not let the central government or the people of Hong Kong down".

But if protesters this week had hoped to catch Xi's attention, it wasn't reflected in his remarks during his visit, which took a hard line on dissent.

Multiple attempts by protesters to get anywhere near Xi during his time in the city ended in failure, while a pro-Hong Kong independence rally scheduled for Friday night was canceled after police refused organizers permission to use a public square.

Xi arrived in Hong Kong Thursday for a three-day trip to attend celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the inaugural ceremony of the fifth-term government of the HKSAR.

The President is likely to again be confronted on his protectionist trade views and his plans to withdraw from the Paris climate accords.

On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the Sino-British Joint Declaration, the agreement by which Hong Kong was handed over from the United Kingdom to China, was now just an "historical document" with no practical significance. Among them was the twenty-year-old Joshua Wong, icon of the "Umbrella Movement" of 2014, or his friend and local parliamentarian Nathan Law.

They want the right to elect Hong Kong's leader: now Hong Kong's Chief Executive is elected by an electoral college of 1,200, stacked with pro-Beijing members.

During his speech, Xi stressed that "one country" is the foundation of "two systems"-a message clearly directed at Hong Kong's growing independence movement".

Thousands of protesters held up signs demanding that China free Liu Xiaobo, the jailed Nobel peace laureate who was recently diagnosed with terminal liver cancer and transferred from prison to hospital. "All we're asking for is what was promised: to have a high degree of autonomy and govern ourselves, but the Chinese government only wants to control Hong Kong".

Some protesters carried a cardboard model of a toilet picturing Leung's face on the lid and Lam's face in the bowl, covered with excrement.

Chinese authorities are suspected of taking them away from Hong Kong, even though they are not allowed to exercise police power there.

"It is not just the Chinese government humiliating the people of Hong Kong but it is that Xi Jinping is humiliating the United Kingdom government".

However, the discrepancy between Hong Kong's democratic traditions and China's one-party rule has been a polarizing issue and occasionally leads to street demonstrations in the former British colony. "The Communists don't have core values and principles to stand on, but we cherish our freedoms, civil rights and the rule of law".
