'Top Gun' Sequel Flying Into Summer 2019

Paramount Studios has given Tom Cruise's "Top Gun" sequel a July 12, 2019, release date - 33 years after the original.

In addition, Tron: Legacy filmmaker Joseph Kosinski will direct the film, EW has confirmed.

The 1986 romantic drama, considered by most to be Cruise's big break, tells the story of his character Flight Lieutenant Peter "Maverick" Mitchell's time at The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School.

Cruise said recently the title would be "Top Gun: Maverick" although Paramount listed the title Friday only as "Top Gun".

In the movie, Tom plays a cocky aspiring pilot who falls in love with the attractive instructor Charlie Blackwood, played by McGillis.

No director has been tapped for the sequel as yet, but original producers David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer will be back on board to produce with Cruise for "Maverick". Though no word on if we'll get an updated version of Berlin's Take My Breath Away.

What do you guys think of the Top Gun sequel release date?

As far as movies that are so bad that they're good, it's incredibly hard to come up against Tony Scott's Top Gun. July 12, 2019. So only an entire year to wait. Given that Cruise is now 51, it's rumored that Maverick has become a mentor to a younger generation of pilots, though I think it's a safe bet that we'll see him climbing into the cockpit throughout the film, possibly doing battle (and besting) the next generation of soulless AI pilots. A Spider-Man: Homecoming followup is set for a week earlier, while The Lion King opens a week later.
