During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump occasionally made mention of the gun violence Chicago continuously endures, and he said he would be the one to help reduce the city's murder rate by "send (ing) in the feds" in order "to fix the disgusting carnage".

Not unlike many of his "crossing the presidential line" dictations, it's questionable whether he even has the lawful authority to send in federal agents for crimes committed within a city council government.

The team will include an additional 20 ATF agents, who arrived in early June, according to a city official, as well as Chicago police officers, IL state troopers, intelligence analysts and state and federal prosecutors. Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in a statement Thursday night that "we are foundationally changing the way we fight crime in Chicago".

"And I am confident in Celinez Nunez, the new Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of ATF, who has experienced the tragic consequences of gang violence firsthand".

When President Donald Trump tweeted in January that he'd "send in the feds!".

There have been 320 murders in Chicago so far this year.

Chicago had 762 homicides last year, more than the combined gun-related death toll in NY and Los Angeles, the only two larger American cities, and the number of shootings has remained high this year.

Western wildfires so large, can be seen from space
The fast-moving fire was ignited after a traffic collision and has authorities warning residents about possible evacuations. A 400-acre (162-hectare) fire in Mariposa County on the western Sierra foothills is 10 percent surrounded.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that 20 ATF agents have been sent to Chicago to combat gun violence and are working with the city's police department and state police on a "strike force".

The President threatened to send in help early in his administration after months of campaigning against crime in Chicago and other major cities. There were 1,935 shooting victims in the city during the same period previous year.

Additional federal support to Chicago has been in the works for several months, according to police officials. According to the police department, there have been 1,703 shooting victims.

Never mind that the Chicago Police Department has earned a reputation as one of the most brutal and racist in the United States.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement late Thursday that federal and Cook County prosecutors plan to develop new strategies to prosecute gun crimes and offenders.

Trump has repeatedly criticized violence in Chicago, asking at a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on June 21: "Look at Chicago". They join 41 ATF agents already in Chicago. Under that initiative, federal agents teamed up with their local counterparts to share resources and intelligence.
