High-Rise Towers Fail Fire Safety Tests in the UK

Housing officers visited the block soon after the Grenfell Tower fire to reassure residents the design and construction of the building is very different from the high-rise in west London.

"The London Fire Brigade advised that there were a number of fire safety issues that we and the LFB were previously unaware of in the Chalcots buildings and recommended that residents should not remain in the buildings until these issues are resolved", Gould said in a statement early Saturday.

The Department for Communities said in a statement: All landlords and fire and rescue services for these local authorities have been alerted to the results and we are in touch with all of them to support and monitor follow-up action.

They now permit cladding similar to what was believed to be used on the Grenfell Tower, as long as the building has other fire safety measures in place, such as a working sprinkler system.

The government has said that cladding samples taken from 60 high-rise buildings across 25 local authorities in England have failed fire safety tests.

The cladding on Grenfell tower has been the central point of the investigation into the blaze.

Work had been due to begin on stripping cladding from buildings on the Chalcots Estate, but Camden Council ordered the "decant" of residents on Friday evening.

"All parts of the United Kingdom must learn from the disaster at Grenfell Tower and we must do all we can to ensure no-one has to experience the loss of a loved one in such tragic circumstances".

The Latest: Evacuated London residents express anger, fear

Arconic, the company that supplied the combustible cladding to a distributor for use at Grenfell, was accused of ignoring the hazardous nature of such panels despite knowing the fire risk they pose, according to company e-mails dating from 2014 and seen by Reuters. At least one hotel chain is calling in experts to make certain its properties meet safety regulations.

The council said it had no option but to move the residents of 650 flats, while work is carried out.

Several people who were in the hallways, stairwells and common parts of the block were told to evacuate whereas those who where in their flats and smoke or heat was not affecting them were told to stay in their flat.

Camden's local council chose to evacuate the hundreds of households due to safety concerns following the devastating fire that killed 79 people in Grenfell Tower.

Greater Manchester Fire Service said its fire risk audit of the site concluded the building "is safe for all residents".

Prime Minister Theresa May said the government had arranged to test cladding on "all relevant tower blocks" following the deadly June 14 inferno.

The insulation behind the cladding, however, was said to be highly fire resistant Rockwool Duoslab. Communities Secretary Sajid Javid admitted that every single piece of cladding sent for testing so far has failed to meet standards. Survivors can not believe that the death toll has not risen.
