The New Orleans Saints announced Monday that defensive tackle Nick Fairley has been placed on the non-football illness list.

National Football League teams first discovered that Fairley had a heart issue - Payton called it an enlarged heart - at the combine before the 2011 draft.

After starting all 16 games for New Orleans last season and recording 6.5 sacks, he signed a 4-year, $28 million extension with the Saints in March.

Fairley visited a cardiologist last month and since then has been away from OTAs and out of communication with many of his teammates.

Despite having the league's best offense in terms of yards in 2016, the Saints missed the playoffs for a third straight season.

However, Payton explained that Fairley's condition had apparently worsened or become more concerning this year.

Obama reportedly ordered implants to be deployed in key Russian networks
The project, which Obama approved in a covert-action finding, was still in its planning stages when Obama left office. Instead, the US expelled a few dozen Russian diplomats and imposed other somewhat minor sanctions .

Fairley has played for three different teams since being drafted 13th overall in 2011. However, a doctor has said that his career should not continue, according to Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Fairley was a first-round draft selection of Detroit in 2011 and spent the first four seasons of his National Football League career with the Lions. But now the future of Fairley with the Saints and his future in the National Football League are all on hold with Nick being shelved for the 2017 season.

New Orleans' top remaining interior defensive linemen include Sheldon Rankins, Tyeler Davison and David Onyemata.

The upcoming season is the least of Fairley's career concerns. His 2016 season with the Saints was the only of his six in which he played every regular season game.
