In light of his suspicion, Trump said in Friday's interview, he suggested he may have taped Comey in an effort to keep him honest.

In an interview on Fox News, President Donald Trump said his story didn't change in regards to the possibility of recorded conversations with former FBI Director James Comey.

Comey was carrying out the investigation into alleged ties between Trump's administration and Russian Federation that led to the triumph of Trump in the 2016 presidential elections.

Trump fired Comey, who as FBI director was leading the bureau's Russian Federation investigation, on May 9.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer praised President Trump during an interview on Sunday for insinuating there could be recordings of his conversations with former FBI Director James Comey.

But Dershowitz acknowledged that the tweet may have been a short-sighted attempt to ensure that Comey was careful about his public statements on Trump.

During the Fox interview, Mr Trump also questioned the impartiality of special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the probe into Russia's meddling in the U.S. election and the possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

But the president had steadfastly refused to clarify whether any tapes existed.

Relations between the White House and the press continued to deteriorate on Friday as the White House communications team prohibited cameras from filming the White House press briefing.

Trump also reiterated the sentiment he expressed via tweet on Thursday - that he did not make tapes of his and Comey's interactions.

Trump also expressed hope that House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi remains in her leadership position because it is beneficial to Republicans.

Trump has also repeatedly claimed that millions of illegal immigrants voted in the last election, with no proof. I mean, the whole thing is ridiculous if you want to know the truth from that standpoint.

In the piece, Wittes recalled that Comey had told him at a lunch meeting that he sought to distance himself from Trump. "You never know what's happening when you see what the Obama administration - and perhaps longer than that - was doing all of this unmasking and surveillance and you read all about it and I've been reading about it for the last couple of months, about the seriousness of the - and awful situation with surveillance all over the place", said Mr Trump.

President Donald Trump on Friday used an interview to defend his actions in relation to the Russian Federation investigation as he signed a veterans bill into law. The third front is Trump's crimes as president especially obstruction of justice. Those days came and went without an answer. He is friends with James Comey.

At a Senate committee hearing this month, Comey suggested that the president's reference to possible recordings inspired him to disclose to the media through an intermediary a memo he had written of an Oval Office conversation from February. The foreign surveillance was eventually passed on to American spies, who acceded to demands from the West Wing of the Obama White House and handed over transcripts of conversations and names of participants.
