Seven police officers have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

"Fearing for their safety, the two officers fired shots at the suspects, striking suspect one in the ankle", Mr O'Toole said.

"We have a police officer standing in his own yard, who hears the commotion from the vehicle crash on the block, comes out, and has a conversation with some of the officers on the scene who are pursuing the stolen auto - and he winds up getting shot!" Two officers met him and ordered him to the ground which he then complied with and after the on-duty Police recognized him as a fellow Police they told him he could stand up and meet them.

The city's Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement that officers were responding to a possible vehicle theft after a recognition software flagged a license plate.

St. Louis' interim police chief, Lawrence O'Toole, said the incident began when officers with an anti-crime task force followed a stolen vehicle and were twice fired upon by its occupants. Interim Police Chief Lawrence O'Toole says gunfire rang out after tire-flattening device was used on the suspect's auto and again when the vehicle stopped less than a mile later. Neither of the officers' names have been released.

According to Schron Jackson, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting occurred just before 10:25 p.m. Wednesday in the 5900 block of Astra, located in the North Pointe neighborhood. The third suspect remains on the loose.

Rufus J. Tate Jr., speaking to Fox 2, added: 'This is the first time that we are aware that a black professional in law enforcement [has] himself [been] shot and treated as an ordinary black guy on the street. So we have a real problem with that.

"In the police report you have so far, there is no description of a threat he received". But this has been a national discussion for the past two years.

It is not yet known who shot the officer. The chief of police had originally blamed the shooting on the off-duty officer getting caught in the crossfire between officers and suspects.

Police are now saying that the unnamed 38-year-old, 11-year vet was injured by fellow colleagues in a separate incident away from the scene.

Yanez was found "not guilty" of manslaughter by a jury but has been fired from his police department.

Two suspects, including the wounded one, were taken into custody.

As for the injured off-duty officer?
