White House: Trump to sign VA accountability bill on Friday

The measure ensures that VA employees who are terminated will not remain on the VA payroll while appealing their terminations.

Today the president signed into law my bill, the VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act.

Trump cast the signing as a fulfillment of a campaign promise to dismiss VA workers "who let our veterans down".

President Donald Trump signed a bill into law Friday as part of the US government's push to improve the Department of Veterans Affairs and holds its employees accountable.

"Those entrusted with the sacred duty of serving our veterans will be held accountable for the care they provide", Mr. Trump said. "They'd like to get certain changes and we'll see if we can take care of that". VA Secretary David Shulkin, an Obama administration holdover, stood alongside Trump as the president jokingly suggested he'd have to invoke his reality TV catchphrase "You're fired" if the reforms were not implemented. The measure passed the House and Senate with broad bipartisan support.

Justin Weber told The Associated Press on Tuesday morning that a press conference is expected later to provide details. Otto was a student at the University of Virginia and graduated from Wyoming high school in 2013.

"Currently, for a variety of reasons, we are not ready to vote for this bill, but we are open to negotiation and obtaining more information before it is brought to the floor", Lee said in a joint statement with Sens.

Concerned Veterans for America launched a massive grassroots effort to garner support for this bill, holding events across the country, making hundreds of thousands of phone calls to Congressional offices and launching online ads targeting all lawmakers to support it. The Senate bill calls for a longer appeal process than the House version - 180 days versus 45 days. The new law also protects whistleblowers in the VA.

Most Americans in the workplace understand if they do not live up to the standards set by their employer, there may be consequences. Until today, the VA Secretary has not had the necessary authority to discipline or fire bad department employees quickly.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican, called the bill signing "a significant step to reform the VA with a renewed objective and ability to serve our veterans".

President Donald Trump signs the "Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act of 2017" in the East Room of the White House, Friday, June 23, 2017, in Washington.
