Camden to evacuate Taplow tower over fire safety fears after Grenfell disaster

Five residential London tower blocks were being evacuated on Friday (June 23) due to fire safety concerns over their external cladding following the deadly Grenfell Tower inferno.

Documents and materials had been seized from a "number of organisations", she added.

British Prime Minister Theresa May offered a message of sympathy to the affected residents, taking to Twitter to pledge she would work with relevant authorities to offer support.

The overnight fire rapidly engulfed Grenfell Tower, with flames shooting up the outside of the building, raising concerns that the cladding material attached to the concrete block didn't comply with fire-safety rules. She added that equivalent aluminum composite tiles used as cladding in a recent refurbishment of the building had failed initial safety tests.

Further tests are being done on the refrigerator, she said, with the assistance of the manufacturer.

Refurbishment on the Chalcots estate in Camden was overseen by Rydon, the company involved in the refit of Grenfell Tower, according to the Rydon website.

The Government has ordered an immediate examination by experts of the model of Hotpoint fridge freezer involved, Downing Street said.

Whirlpool Corp's share price had dropped by 4 percent as of 1630 GMT on Friday, wiping nearly $500 million off the company's value. "We are addressing this as a matter of utmost urgency".

Hotpoint said Friday that "words can not express our sorrow at this bad tragedy" and added it was working with authorities to examine the appliance. Fiona McCormack said the Hotpoint FF175BP fridge-freezer had not been subject to any product recall.

Hundreds of further high-rise buildings are being tested by the Government to see if they pose a fire threat in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy. Some councils have begun removing the panels.

Buildings in London, Manchester and Plymouth are among those where problem cladding has been identified.

Police are considering manslaughter charges in the case, McCormack said, along with other "criminal offences and breaches of legislation and regulations".

Police are looking at all parts of the cladding system and its installation, McCormack said.

"What we are being told at the moment by the Building Research Establishment is that the cladding and insulation failed all safety tests".

In addition to the criminal investigation, police and firefighters are continuing painstaking efforts to locate the victims.

Nine of those who died on 14 June has been formally identified so far.

Some residents believe the official number of those dead or missing presumed dead is lower than the true figure, and McCormack acknowledged they might not know everyone who was in the building as some people might fear coming forward because they were in the country illegally. The forensic and recovery work, she said, could continue into 2018.
