On June 30, 2017, Google will be ending support for the Android Market app on Android 2.1 Eclair and older devices. While this may prove mildly inconvenient for people clinging to old smartphones, what's more surprising is the fact that Google was still supporting the old app store.

If you've been with Android from the beginning, you probably know just how far Google's operating system has come. "Google Play, the replacement for Android Market, is available on Android 2.2 and above", Maximilian Ruppaner, a software engineer on Google Play said in a statement. This means that even if a user has an old device running one of the said versions of Google's OS, Google's settlement to end support for Android Market shouldn't make any difference in real-life. Unfortunately, because of "technical restrictions" of the Android Market app, users who are affected by this cut-off won't even be notified on their devices.

It's been 7 years since Eclair was launched, and based on the latest Android distribution numbers, Eclair and older versions don't event register on the usage stats anymore. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is nearing a similar fate with a 0.8 percent figure. There was Android Market for apps and games, Google eBookstore for books and Google Music for music.

Do you remember using the Android Market to download apps for your smartphone?

Kaspersky Lab reported the malware to Google and both apps have been deleted from the Play Store. However, the search giant also says that it will still be supporting and carrying later versions of Android Market for as long as possible.

Devices running Android 2.1 and below will lose support for the Android Market app on June 30.
