The remarks came amid questions whether the strike - Iran's first in the Syrian war - had been effective.

The U.S. military has confirmed it killed a top Islamic State cleric in an airstrike. Syrian government and allied troop.

The aim of the USA -backed group is to fully liberate Raqqa from IS, which stormed the city and declared it as its capital in 2014.

Despite the increasing number of incidents, analysts say neither Syria's regime nor Washington now wants a major confrontation.

Meanwhile the Syrian army and its allies are also closing in on Raqqa and last week the Syrian military reached areas controlled by the SDF, making clashes between the opposing alliances nearly inevitable.

Iran's attack on Islamic State targets in Syria did not meet its objectives.

Damascus and its allies have long argued that they are the essential partner to any global effort in Syria, portraying all opposition forces as terrorist groups. The US pilot proceeded to fire off a second missile, an AIM 120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, which hit its intended target, downing the Syrian warplane and forcing its pilot to eject, the officials added. The Syrian Armed Forces said in a statement that the pilot was missing.

The UK, another key coalition ally, said it would continue to take part in air operations despite Russia's warning.

Having largely succeeded in neutralizing most of his rebel opponents, Assad's forces, with the help of Iranian-sponsored Lebanese and Iraqi militias began an elaborate military campaign.

In a statement, USA forces said the drone was shot at after it "displayed hostile intent and advanced on coalition forces".

Under the amendment, the 90-day ban won't start until court orders now blocking it are lifted. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco means the government needs to file a new brief.

Australia has suspended all air operations over Syria in the wake of USA forces downing a Syrian jet and a warning from Russian Federation that US -led coalition planes are now targets for its forces in parts of the country. The first one was downed after it dropped dud ordnance on coalition troops. Syrian military officers described it as a major achievement that boosts the coordination of border security between Iraq and Syria.

The drone was downed just outside the 55 kilometer de-confliction zone, according to the officials. The drone had fired near the base where the coalition trains Syrian rebels.

The Australian military also flies Super Hornets, the only other nation besides the do so.

A defense official says the drone was approaching a military camp near the Syria-Jordan border.

The U.S. -led coalition, which has in recent weeks escalated its aerial bombing campaign in northern Syria and Raqqa province.

Though there is an increased risk for direct confrontation, both Stevenson and Morgan said neither the United States nor Russian Federation had any interest in letting the situation further escalate.

Such targets would be USA planes and surveillance drones.

The U.S. needs now to delineate the lines of advance for Syria's Kurds, and to talk to the Russians, Syrians and Iranians.

"It doesn't look like anyone now intends to deliberately escalate further, but when you've got these little skirmishes. the risk is that you can end up in an escalation by accident", said Sam Heller, a Syria expert at The Century Foundation.

In Iraq, the USA and Iran have a common foe, ISIS, and a common ally, the government in Baghdad.

"This is probably something Washington will end up approving of, if not necessarily colluding in", he said, speaking of the Syrian government's designs on Deir el-Zour.

"The US is trying to draw boundaries in the Syrian conflict and red lines for the Syrian army not to cross them", he said.
