Uber's CEO Travis Kalanick To Take Indefinite Leave

In his email, Kalanick cited the need to take time off to grieve the loss of his mother, who died in a recent boating accident in which his father was also injured, and also to address his own shortcomings.

This comes after Uber released recommendations made by Eric Holder and Tammy Albarran, who recently oversaw a month's long probe into the company. The report also made several specific recommendations about how the company could improve its diversity and inclsuion practices. Created to curb inappropriate behavior, the changes include guidelines for romantic relationships between employees (including a ban on relationships between managers and their team members), policies on alcohol and drug use, and a clearer promotion process for high-performing workers.

The report recommends a massive overhaul for the company accused of promoting a toxic "bro culture" under Kalanick's leadership.

However, it took a tragedy of seismic proportions in Kalanick's personal life to prompt him to take a break for a while as his mother died in a vehicle accident recently. He also says he's responsible for the company's current situation and needs to become a better leader. "Review and reallocate the responsibilities of Travis Kalanick".

Uber has been facing pressure to rein in a no-holds- barred management style led by Kalanick and to reform its workplace culture. Bernard Coleman, the company's head of diversity, should report directly to the CEO or chief operating officer, the report said.

Trump delays effective date of travel ban amid court battle
Under the amendment, the 90-day ban won't start until court orders now blocking it are lifted. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco means the government needs to file a new brief.

Uber's board met for seven hours Sunday to approve all the recommendations from the report and weighed the future of Kalanick and his right-hand man, Emil Michael.

Like many other tech companies, Uber's employees are overwhelmingly white and male. In the letter, Kalanick suggests that he'll use the time to grow as a person, which will ultimately help the company.

In addition, Uber needs to require that managers "immediately" report instances of discrimination, harassment or retaliation, and ensure that the company's codes of conduct apply to offsite events and conferences, too. The firm checked into 215 complaints, and 57 remain under investigation. Jeff Jones resigned as Uber's president after less than a year on the job.

Uber, which is the world's richest venture-backed startup valued at some $68 billion, operates in dozens of countries despite problems with regulators in many jurisdictions and protests from established taxi operators.

Earlier, Bonderman reportedly apologized in an email to staff. Uber's PR team reweeted a Times reporter's post with an excerpt from the apology, where Bonderman called it a "disrespectful comment" and saying "I deeply regret it". Uber's troubles over the past few months have attracted a lot of bad press and there are genuine concerns that the company might be on the verge of implosion and corrective measures became necessary.
