Kushner Arrives in Israel: Can He Revive Stalled Mideast Peace Talks?

US President Donald Trump's senior advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner held "productive" meetings with Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas on Wednesday, the White House said.

Cabinet allies say Netanyahu's primary focus now is on building relations with Arab states in the Persian Gulf, which already are cooperating quietly with Israel, primarily on security matters involving shared foes. A picture posted with his announcement shows construction vehicles digging up ground.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Six-day War, when Israel fought Egypt, Jordan, and Syria and emerged with territory, which the Palestinians see as the basis for a future Palestinian state. Instead, construction during that period has expanded existing settlements or taken place in unauthorized outposts like Amona.

The Trump administration faces the same obstacles that have doomed previous attempts by a string of Republican and Democratic administrations: deep disagreements over key issues such as borders, dueling claims to Jerusalem and the fate of millions of Palestinian refugees and their descendants.

The Trump administration has discouraged settlement activity but has not taken as hard of a line as former President Obama. Trump condemned the decision at the time.

The Palestinians and the worldwide community consider the settlements obstacles to Palestinian statehood.

White House discussing moving Spicer to senior communications role
To honor this moment in Spicer's career, we've edited together Spicer's most...uh...memorable moments from behind the podium. The changes will begin to roll out in the near future, the White House indicated.

Also on Wednesday, the White House released a readout of a call between Trump and newly-appointed Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, who discussed "efforts to achieve a lasting peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians". He was accompanied by the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman.

"(He) knows the region, knows the people, knows the players", Trump told the New York Times during an interview late previous year. Envoy Jason Greenblatt has already made several visits. Malka wrestled with the man for several seconds as he stabbed her multiple times before other officers saw what was happening and opened fire, killing him, police said.

Despite the ostensible warm welcome Kushner received from both Israel and the Palestinians, however, well-placed sources have also told The Times of Israel that there are no imminent plans for a Netanyahu-Abbas summit.

The group added, "Palestinian residents are being increasingly dispossessed of their lands, roots and livelihood, to be replaced by Israeli control either by direct official action or by the settlers acting as its envoys".

Israel blames the violence on incitement by Palestinian political and religious leaders compounded on social media sites that glorify violence and encourage attacks.
