Cavs, GM Griffin to part after 3 straight NBA Finals trips

And it would appear that interest is mutual, with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert set to meet with Billups later on Tuesday. Billups helped Detroit to an NBA championship in 2004 and also won that year's NBA Finals MVP award. Not a rapt fan base. All of that while under intense scrutiny and pressure with LeBron James returning to the fold.

He's demanding. A fearless, risk-taking, casino-owning gambler.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are beginning their search for a general manager in the worst possible time.

Griffin was denied permission by the Cavs to speak to the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks about their general manager openings during the postseason.

After losing in five games to the Warriors in the NBA Finals last week, the Cavaliers have been aggressive in working on upgrading their roster.

Griffin, though, did not get an extension after the Cavs won the title past year and he essentially worked as a lame duck during a sometimes turbulent 2016-17 season. At the time, Griffin indicated he thought he'd be back with the Cavs. LeBron James reportedly had no idea that Griffin was leaving, and he felt disappointed upon learning the news. Thanks for what u did for the team for 3 yrs!

There has been plenty of news emerging as we get closer to the NBA Draft. A few hours after the Cavaliers officially announced this decision, James used Twitter to express his gratitude for what Griffin did for the team. He also fired Blatt in 2016 and replaced him with current coach Tyronn Lue.

Following the 2013-14 season, Cleveland's fourth straight non-playoff season since James' departure for Miami in 2010, Griffin signed Irving to a long-term contract extension at the earliest possible moment.

On Monday, the Cleveland Cavaliers and general manager David Griffin parted ways, which shocked the entire National Basketball Association community.

No, not everything worked out.

A year ago, David Griffin was celebrating the Cleveland Cavaliers' first championship and the city's first title since 1964. The Cavs also had been linked with Paul George from IN, as Griffin was attempting to pull off a last-second splash, while knowing his job was IN jeopardy. First off, Gilbert has never signed any of his previous GMs to an extension, electing to move on to the next person in his chain of command once their contracts expired.

The 47-year-old Griffin had been Cleveland's GM since May 2014.

Before James spoke out, it was well known that the league's No.1 player wanted Griffin to remain with the Cavs.

Griffin said in a statement that Cavs is a team built largely on fit, but at this point, the fit is no longer right for them to continue together. The Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers could be preferred destinations for the three-time champ, and the Cavs should be doing everything in their power to make sure that he stays with the team for the foreseeable future.

To create this type of front office uncertainty by letting a GM go just days before the draft seems like the last thing the Cavaliers need headed into the offseason.

Watching the video now, it's as if Griffin knows his fate. "They love each other like brothers and that's what we were trying to create from the beginning".
