No deal yet between UK Conservatives and DUP to back PM May

May is seeking to secure the support of the DUP's 10 members of parliament after her Conservatives failed to secure a majority in a general election last week. A senior Conservative source said: "We are making a lot of progress, it's all being done in the spirit of cooperation, with a real focus on strengthening the union and providing stability at this time".

The London fire, which claimed at least 17 lives, forced the cancellation of the City of London's Mansion House dinner, where May's finance minister, Philip Hammond, had the chance to revive calls for a more business-friendly exit from the EU.

The Conservative source said talks with the small Northern Irish party were progressing well ahead of meetings later Thursday in Downing Street with all of the British province's main political leaders.

If the Government cannot even secure a deal with the DUP, how on Earth can they get a deal with the EU?

"There is a unity of objective among people in the United Kingdom", May said following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. But pressure was mounting on Mrs May to change course on the type of Brexit Britain should pursue, and consult more widely across rival parties. She also said that the talks with May's party had covered corporation tax and same sex marriage.

Norway is in the single market, in return for accepting free immigration from the EU, EU courts and budget payments.

The chancellor, Philip Hammond, is preparing to fight for the United Kingdom to remain within the EU's customs union which could safeguard jobs and trade with EU members but would severely restrict the UK's ability to strike its own trade deals around the world.

Negotiations over Britain's exit from the European Union will begin on Monday.

May has not yet responded to a proposal from some Conservatives for business groups and MPs from all parties to agree a national position on Brexit.

British Prime Minister Theresa May plans to put her program to parliament next week, a sign of confidence that talks on propping up her government will conclude in a deal and end days of uncertainty since she lost her majority.

Divisions over Europe helped sink the premierships of May's predecessors Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Cameron, and many of her lawmakers and party members favour a sharp break with the EU. To do so, she will be heavily reliant on the 10 lawmakers from the eurosceptic DUP, who can help her edge past the 326 votes needed in Parliament to avoid the collapse of the government.

"The danger is that however much the government tries, they will not be seen to be impartial if they are locked into a parliamentary deal in Westminster with one of the Northern Ireland parties", Major said.

The government said it will press ahead with the State Opening of Parliament on Wednesday despite there being no guarantee of a full agreement to ensure the
Conservatives can pass future legislation.

The Northern Irish border with European Union member Ireland remains a headache for Brussels.
