McCain: Americans 'stupid' to travel to North Korea

Otto was a student at the University of Virginia and graduated from Wyoming high school in 2013.

Warmbier's family has not specified how he slipped from a comatose state to death, but said in a statement on Monday that the "awful torturous mistreatment" he endured while in captivity meant "no other outcome was possible".

President Trump said Tuesday that what happened to Warmbier is a "total disgrace" and his lengthy detention "should never ever be allowed to happen". He died Monday in Cincinnati. Those numbers may decline after Warmbier's death, especially because Young Pioneer Tours - the group that organized Warmbier's tour - has canceled future trips for Americans.

Analysts say his death will likely cast a shadow on relations between the USA and North Korea and compound efforts by South Korea's new liberal president, Moon Jae-in, to improve ties with the North.

McCain is the Republican chairman of the Armed Services Committee.

A coroner's office in OH is investigating the death of a 22-year-old college student who died shortly after his return to the USA after almost a year and a half in North Korean detention, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Warmbier, who had been detained since March 2016, died in an OH hospital Monday, one week after the North Korean government medically evacuated him. Justin Weber told The Associated Press on Tuesday morning that a press conference is expected later to provide details.

And American doctors found no evidence to support the regime's explanation, but confirmed that Mr Warmbier had suffered extensive and unexplained brain damage that had left him in a vegetative state.

This story has been corrected to show the coroner's last name is Sammarco, not Sammaraco.

Now I hope the American government will help, etc., etc.

When asked if he believed the Obama administration had adequately attempted to secure Otto's release, the elder Warmbier responded: "I think the results speak for themselves".

South Korea's President Moon Jae-in told CBS News it was "quite clear" that North Korea had "a heavy responsibility in the process that led to Mr Warmbier's death".

Dr. Michael Baden, a Fox News contributor and one of the nation's leading forensic pathologists, says an autopsy may be the only way to determine if the student's coma was the result of botulism and a sleeping pill, as North Korea claims, or a savage beating. It's impossible to know what the cause of death was, but specialists revealed that it had to do with a lack of oxygen reaching his brain. He arrived in OH on June 13 after being held for more than 17 months.

While there, Warmbier tried to steal a poster from the hotel in which he was staying. In March that year, he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for committing what Pyongyang called a hostile act against the state.

Soon after his imprisonment, Warmbier fell into a coma.
