The driver rammed a auto carrying explosives into a police convoy before bursting into flames on the famous avenue, in an "attempted attack" on security forces, France's interior minister said.

Two French police officials say the man who rammed into a police convoy on Paris' Champs-Elysees was a 31-year-old man from a Paris suburb who had been flagged for extremism.

It also marks the second time this year that Paris' most famous avenue, renowned for its shopping, dining and monuments, has been the scene of bloodshed.

Collomb said that Monday's incident justified further extension of France's so-called "state of emergency", a heightened security and surveillance regimen that has been in place since November 2015, when Islamic State militants carried out a series of coordinated attacks on a concert hall and cafes across Paris, killing 130.

The attacker was killed in Monday's incident.

The gunman, Karim Cheurfi, was shot dead by police and a note praising the Islamic State group was found next to his body.

Victoria Boucher and daughter Chrystel say they're hoping the Champs-Elysees reopens soon.

Authorities say a driver has rammed his auto into a police vehicle in the Champs-Elysees shopping district.

Police had earlier warned people to avoid the neighborhood, one of the French capital's most popular with tourists.

The assailant died in the incident, although investigators offered no immediate details about the cause of his death.

A vehicle with all doors and trunk opened is pictured in a Police sealed off area of the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris, on June 19, 2017, after a auto crashed into a police van before bursting into flames, with the driver being armed, probe sources said.

They said the suspect, wearing a white shirt...

It is unclear the attacker has been killed or why he drove into the police Monday.

Leonard Odihe said he saw officers break into the auto, pull the man out and throw two weapons on the ground, "a big pistol and another big arm like the weapons police carry".

A subway station in the area is closed.

The attack Monday was the latest of a string in France and Britain.
