Cars 3 cruises toward $50m-plus weekend

The third film in the Pixar series features the return of Owen Wilson as plucky race auto Lightning McQueen, and proved to be a draw at multiplexes throughout North America by taking in $53.5 million domestically and $21.3 million overseas, for an opening weekend total of $74.8 million, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The threequel made $53.5 million from 4,256 theaters for its domestic debut, enough to beat Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman to the finish line for first place.

The third "Cars" movie from Walt Disney Co.'s Pixar topped the box office in theaters, beating a slew of middling new releases and dethroning two-time champ "Wonder Woman". The ensemble voice cast of "Cars 3" includes Owen Wilson, Cristela Alonzo, Armie Hammer, Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Nathan Fillion, Kerry Washington, and Lea DeLaria. This marks a 30 percent drop for the DC film, whose domestic and global totals now stand at approximately $274.6 million and $571.8 million, respectively.

The Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me landed at No. 3 at the North American box office over the weekend.

It buried The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, which placed fourth. But while the movie continues to fare poorly in North America, the first in Universal's Dark Universe series has already earned $239 million internationally, bringing the movie's worldwide total to $296 million. Just over half of critics positively reviewed the movie, about a bachelorette party gone awry. "Though "47 Meters" has been met with a tepid reception - 55 percent RT score and a C on CinemaScore - it's an opening above the $6 million target trackers set for it before the weekend". The shark-infested survival horror film sees This Is Us star Mandy Moore and The Originals' Claire Holt play sisters who decide to go cage-diving with sharks, only to have an accident cause their cage to break off from the boat and sink to the bottom of the sea floor with both of them still in it.

The news is rough for Sony's raunchy female comedy, "Rough Night".
