North Korea claims new cruise missile can crush US, South Korean warships

North Korea fires suspected cruise missiles after US drills

Pyongyang launched several land-to-sea missiles early Thursday, under the supervision of leader Kim Jong Un, KCNA said.

It said leader Kim Jong Un observed the launches and that the missiles "accurately detected and hit" floating targets at sea after making "circular flights".

The launch came less than a week after the United Nations Security Council imposed fresh sanctions on North Korea, and drew condemnation from South Korean President Moon Jae In, who has hoped to engage Pyongyang in dialogue.

A set of photos carried by North Korea's main newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, on June 9, 2017, shows the test-firing of a new ground-to-ship cruise missile.

The US have contraversially began installing the THAAD anti-ballistic missile system on South Korea in a bid to nip Kim Jong-un's budding nuclear capability in the bud.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Thursday that the suspension of THAAD deployment was "part of the conversations" that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had with Trump at an Oval Office meeting on Thursday.

The joint celebration took place in Seoul and Pyongyang between 2003 and 2008 but has since been idle amid Pyongyang's military provocations and strained cross-border relations.

The 6,900-ton USS Cheyenne, whose home port is Pearl Harbor, arrived in the South Korean port of Busan Tuesday, as the USA steps up its own muscle-flexing in the region. That commitment remains ironclad.

The assailant had nursed grievances against President Donald Trump and the GOP - and was shot by police and later died. They also signed oversized cards sending well wishes to those who were injured in the shooting, including Rep.

The future of the program has been uncertain since South Korea announced the suspension.

On Wednesday, the presidential office announced deployment suspension of the new THAAD launchers, now stored at a United States army base, until the completion of environmental impact assessments, denying the reports the withdrawal of already deployed launchers, including two installed in Seongju [county in the north] during the election campaign. The improved range indicates the North is pursuing weapons capable of reaching USA aircraft carriers that operate from deeper positions, he said.

North Korea's claim of victory has not be independently verified.

The North has carried out two atomic tests and dozens of missile launches since the beginning of previous year in its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States - something President Trump has vowed "won't happen".

Moon said after the new launches that his government "won't back off even a single step and make any compromise" on the issue of national security.

The South said they were fired from the town of Wonsan and flew about 200 kilometers (125 miles) and landed in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

Thursday's missile test was its fourth in as many weeks.
