2 civilians killed in forces' firing in Kashmir, 1 militant gunned down

The militants who ambushed a police party at Achabal in Anantnag district of South Kashmir disfigured the faces of the six cops slain in the attack before walking away with their weapons. The attack took place 17 km from the spot in Arwani where an encounter between militants and security forces was in progress and barely 5 km from the Army's Khandru camp, one of the most fortified installations in south Kashmir. While the government forces were trying to lay cordon of the village, young men hit roads and threw stones and brickbats towards policemen, apparently in a bid to help militants break through the siege.

Sources said they were on barricade duty at Thajiwara in Achabal following inputs of terrorist movement in the area.

Forces, however, razed at least three houses to ground and managed to neutralize all the three militants. According to intelligence agencies, Mattoo had joined militancy at the age of 18. Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba claimed responsibility for the attack.

Militants fighting to end Indian rule of Kashmir have stepped up attacks in recent weeks on government forces patrolling the area as counter-insurgency operations intensify.

A shutdown was called by the separatist leaders in the Valley to protest the killing of two civilians in an encounter on Friday in south Kulgam district. He was involved in the killing of a police constable on Thursday in Kulgam's Bogund area, the spokesman said.
