"I want to compliment (Majority Whip Steve) Scalise's security detail as well as U.S. Capitol Police and the Alexandria police for their help in this senseless act of violence".

Two injured Capitol Hill police officers are being hailed as heroes who prevented a massacre at the hands of a would-be assassin in Alexandria, Va., on Wednesday.

Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner also remains at the MedStar Washington hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to her ankle, but is in "good condition and good spirits" the hospital said.

"I spoke with special agent Bailey and special agent Griner this morning".

"It is clear to me, based on various eyewitness accounts, that without these two heroes, Agent Bailey and Agent Griner, many lives would have been lost", said Ryan, who got a standing ovation from the House chamber.

"Had Steve been sick, or exhausted or lazy and didn't go to practice, then you would have saw a full-fledged massacre", Richmond said.

The shooter has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old IL man who had in recent months been living out of his auto in the Alexandria area.

FDA to delay rule requiring new nutrition facts panel
The new nutrition panel was created to make it easier for consumers to see how many calories and added sugars a product contained. This isn't the first time the Trump administration's FDA has slowed the introduction of Obama-era food industry rules.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said the scene was a "killing field" and that without Griner and Bailey, "it would have been a massacre". After an exchange of gunfire with police, the shooter died.

Barton said in a statement, "The suspect was shooting at members and staff on the field".

Griner and Bailey have been working together for years, most recently on the security detail of former Majority Leader Eric Cantor. To those who know her, it's no surprise she bested her opponent. Jeff Flake, R-Arizona; Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Florida; and Rep.

"Thank god they were there", said Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), who plays on the Democratic baseball team.

Rep. Roger Williams, a Texas Republican who witnessed the shooting and whose legislative aide was shot, said he and his family will be "forever grateful" that the officers prevented what could have easily been 25 deaths or more.
