An election in March saw the Protestant, pro-British DUP finish narrowly ahead of Catholic socialists Sinn Fein.

But Stormont parties have a June 29 deadline to end the impasse and reach consensus on re-establishing a devolved administration in the region.

He also pointed out that three months after Article 50 had been triggered, formal discussions had yet to start.

In a sign that Britain was sticking to its guns on some of the key points in negotiations with the European Union, the Brexit minister said on Friday no deal could be struck on exiting the European Union unless the future relationship with the bloc was taken into account alongside the withdrawal terms.

"I want us to have a good working relationship so that from his jurisdiction and my jurisdiction we can work together for the good of all our people", she added.

"We are starting", Barnier said on Twitter.

"We're anxious to know how they want to leave, that's the process we're in right now and I frankly believe they will continue with that and they will leave", he said.

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams also led a party delegation including its leader in the North, Michelle O'Neill, for a first meeting on Northern Ireland with the new Taoiseach.

Mr Adams said they would be pushing Mr Varadkar to raise the prospect of a border poll on Irish reunification within the next five years in discussions with the British government.

Chancellor Philip Hammond said Britain should prioritise jobs and prosperity and take a "pragmatic" approach as it begins Brexit talks next week.

"The issues that have to be dealt with have been talked about now for quite a period of time", she said.

Ms Foster dismissed suggestions her deal with the Tories threatened the peace process. "What would happen then?"

But speculating now on different kinds of trade pact - on "soft Brexit" or "hard" - is to put cart before horse, they say.

European Union leaders, who will meet May at a summit next Thursday, have been irritated by her repeated threats to walk out with "no deal" - even if most see that as a campaigning bluff given the chaos it would cause.

Colum Eastwood, leader of the SDLP, Northern Ireland's second-largest Irish nationalist party, said his party had a "positive" meeting with the prime minister over her efforts to come up with a deal with the DUP.

The Conservative source said: "We're confident of getting an agreement, we're confident that the Queen's speech will be passed".

"We want to see any deal between those two parties reflect the wishes of all of the people of Northern Ireland, not just one section of the community".
