United Kingdom leader May seen fighting for survival after election failure

May's gamble in calling an early election backfired spectacularly, as her Conservative Party lost its majority in Parliament.

The Conservatives held 330 seats in the last Parliament, compared with 229 for Labour, 54 for the Scottish National Party and nine for the Liberal Democrats.

Only one out of the total 650 Commons seats was left to be called and May's Tories had won just 318 (they had won 331 in 2015), eight short of a majority.

Voter turnout in the election was at 68.7 per cent and young voters turned out in big numbers in this snap poll election.

But, given the Conservative Party's history of summarily dethroning its leaders, there is a strong chance that May will have to resign as prime minister well before the Brexit negotiations end.

May, jolted by the electoral setback, however, remained defiant to calls for her resignation and vowed to form a minority government with the informal backing of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

It is fair to say, this is not the result that many were expecting.

The ruling Conservative Party stands to lose its parliamentary majority, potentially triggering another political natural disaster in the United Kingdom and fueling lots of uncertainty about the country's future Brexit negotiations.

The outcome was a significant political embarrassment for May, who called for an early election in April based on polls that showed the Conservatives would increase their majority and give her more clout in hard talks with the European Union on terms for exiting the political and economic alliance.

Before the election there had been widespread speculation in the British media that Mrs May would replace Chancellor Philip Hammond if she won a large majority.

Nuttall quit as UKIP leader later Friday, after the party failed to win any seats.

"The Prime Minister called the election because she wanted a mandate and the mandate is that she has lost seats", he said after his win from his seat at Islington North in north London.

"The mandate she's got is lost Conservative seats, lost votes, lost support and lost confidence". She became prime minister through a Conservative Party leadership contest when her predecessor, David Cameron, resigned after voters backed leaving the EU.

Corbyn's Labour Party officially backs Brexit.

"And as I reflect on the results, I will reflect on what we need to do in the future to take the party forward". Among the casualties was Alex Salmond, a former first minister of Scotland and one of the party's highest-profile lawmakers.

May, who went into the election with a reputation for quiet competence, was criticized for a lackluster campaigning style and for a plan to force elderly people to pay more for their care, a proposal her opponents dubbed the "dementia tax".

Oettinger said that "time for Brexit negotiations is getting tight" and added that "they must be closed in October 2018" to allow for the complicated approval process in the member states to run its course ahead of the official two-year deadline.
