Google poaches Apple employee in move to build its own processors

Google's chip ambitions have been oft-rumored since 2015 and picked up steam with the launch of the Pixel last October. Gulati has a long work history in processors, having previously been employed by AMD and Broadcom before spending eight years with Apple. While not a household name, Gulati has been instrumental in the development of Apple's Ax series of chips.

Self-sourcing chips can help differentiate a company's line of devices from the competition since, for example, numerous companies use the same Qualcomm chips in phones.

The search giant has hired Manu Gulati, a chip architect at Apple, Variety first reported on Tuesday that.

Apple unveils 'the most powerful Mac we have ever made'
Among the new offerings from Apple is a challenge to the Amazon Echo and Google Home devices along with operating system updates. Apple hasn't declared when exactly the new products will be coming to India, only stating that it'll arrive later this month.

Just like the Pixel phones, Google's chip (s) will be designed how they want and how it should work with Android.

"The Pixel is seen as Google's answer to the iPhone, but considering Apple sells 40 to 50 million iPhones in a quarter, Google has some catching up to do", according to Ars Technica, a tech website. Hundreds of OEMs, each with a varying set of specifications coupled with different skins running on top of Android leading to a fluctuation in the performance department. Building its own chips would give Google tighter control over its hardware.

It looks like Google is preparing some big changes to its mobile division going forward as reports this week claim that Google has managed to hire up an ex-Apple chip architect. Moreover, 15 Apple patents, many of them chip-related, list Gulati as one of their inventors.
