Projections show Macron's party set for parliamentary majority

The final results will be confirmed next Sunday after the second round of voting, CNN reported.

Other parties' leaders blamed the historically low turnout for their poor showing and said it masked the depth of the divisions in France's political landscape.

Many voters stayed away from the polls, with turnout of only 50 per cent. Macron's opponents say this helped En Marche - and are now anxious about what the French President could achieve with such a thumping majority.

It will be contested in next Sunday's second round by Mounir Mahjoubi, the youngest minister in Macron's new government, and hard-left candidate Sarah Legrain.

He's already started to revamp French intelligence services after terrorists killed more than 200 people since the beginning of 2015.

Parisian voter Thibault Gouache said he was keen to see fresh faces in the parliament.

Collomb also expressed gratitude to the law enforcement service for ensuring the security during the election amid terror threat.

Macron has enjoyed a smooth start in the five weeks since he beat far-right candidate Marine Le Pen to become France's youngest-ever president, naming a cabinet that crosses left- right lines and making a big impression at worldwide summits.

It was a similar message from Florian Philippot the vice-president of the National Front, who said urged the party's supporters to "mobilise en masse for the second round" to avoid a Macron walkover.

Le Pen has spent the past six years since taking charge of the FN trying to expunge the xenophobic, anti-Semitic ethos engendered by her father Jean-Marie Le Pen, who co-founded the party in 1972.

President Emmanuel Macron's La Republique En Marche (LREM)'s political movement is set to secure a sweeping parliamentary majority after securing 32 percent of the vote in the first round of legislative elections, results show Monday.

Conceding that the party was facing "unprecedented" losses, Cambadelis appealed to voters to rally behind Macron's rivals to avoid the president monopolising power.

Macron's party contested 526 constituencies out of a possible 577 and it put forward 266 women candidates, while 219 come from outside politics.

Macron called on French voters to give him a "majority to make changes" on the night of his victory May 7. According to the projections following the first round of the country's parliamentary election, Macron's En Marche! party is leading by a huge gap. The Republicans and Socialists dominated the house for generations.

But Macron's score of 24 percent in the first round of the presidential race and Sunday's low turnout undermine "the illusion of Macron-mania", he said.

Few MPs were elected outright on Sunday.

By late afternoon, just 41 percent of registered voters on the French mainland had cast ballots.

The Republicans - who had hoped to rebound from their humiliation in the presidential vote - are shown trailing in second with a predicted 70-130 seats. Some key figures from both parties have rallied behind Mr Macron.
