Hussain Nawaz appears before JIT for fifth time

Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will appear on Thursday before an anti-corruption team investigating allegations of his family's use of offshore tax havens.

According to the summons document, seen by Reuters, JIT asked the Prime Minister's office to bring "all relevant record/documents/material" to the interview at its office in the capital, Islamabad on Thursday.

In the past few weeks, the JIT, comprising of representatives of intelligence agencies, has questioned Sharif's sons Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz, The Hindu reported. Sources said the development was conveyed to the prime minister when he returned from Kazakhstan on Saturday where he had been attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. This will entail almost all the documents and evidence submitted before the Supreme Court by the Prime Minister's counsel, Makhdoom Ali Khan.

He said the JIT will not be able to find any evidence against him or his family as they have not committed any crime, adding that there is nothing against them except for accusations.

The report also said that Finance Minister Ishaq Dar may also be questioned by the team before Sharif's appearance.

Sharif, in Lahore, met with his close confidantes on Sunday to discuss the issue.

The JIT, formed by the supreme court to probe the money trail of the property owned by the Sharif family in London, had questioned Sharif's sons-Hussain and Hasan-last month over the family's alleged improper business dealings.

Earlier, while hearing the petition submitted by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's son Hussain Nawaz over his leaked picture and recording of the JIT's proceedings, the bench perused the reply of the JIT on the petition.

"No government or court can take action merely on the basis of doubts and allegations", he said.

It would be the first time in Pakistan's recent history that a sitting prime minister appears before such an investigating panel.
