Taylor Swift arrives at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Beverly Hills California Ashley Silvers of Miami invited Swift to her graduation party

Once Spotify's most visible critic, pop superstar Taylor Swift on Friday returned her music to all streaming services as the number of artists to boycott the booming format dwindles. But that's not exactly the case.

On Thursday, Taylor's team announced that she would be returning her extensive music back catalog to streaming services, including Spotify, at midnight on June 9, the same time Katy's Witness was set to drop. As of this morning, a Spotify playlist of her greatest hits had drawn almost 30,000 subscribers.

Now, with Swift's discography available on Spotify, Google Play and others, Apple is facing an even steeper hill to climb in order to overtake its chief rival.

"In celebration of "1989" selling over 10 million albums worldwide and the RIAA's 100 million song certification announcement, Taylor wants to thank her fans by making her entire back catalog available to all streaming services tonight at midnight", a statement from the official TaylorNation Instagram read. It was a full shut-down and then she writes a song about me and I'm like "OK, cool, cool, cool".

Swift's decision also marks a realisation that physical sales or paid downloads of "1989" have passed their peak so long after the release. Apple Music, on the other hand, has no free option and is only available to paying subscribers.

Apple Unveils Its Most Powerful Mac Ever - The All-New iMac Pro
Apple still positions the MacBook for people who are okay with good enough performance in a package that's easy to take on the go. Over the past couple of years, this has changed though, owing to Apple's apparent abandonment of its most high-end products.

A year later, an entirely different dispute, this time with Apple and its new-at-the-time Apple Music service, ended much differently. Swift allowed Apple to stream it after the music platform chose to pay artists royalties during its free three-month trial. Less than a year after that, she was starring in commercials for the service listening to Drake, while Drake was starring in commercials for the service listening to Swift.

That's likely music to Swift's ears.

So the question this morning is, why are Taylor Swift's albums now on Spotify?

When "1989" was first released in 2014, streaming made up 27 percent of the music industry's revenue. So she pulled out all her albums and just went exclusive with Apple Music in 2015. "Valuable things should be paid for".
