Trump approval rating hits new low in new poll

Donald Trump Impeachment odds after comey firing

U.S. Sen. Cory Booker said President Trump may have "engaged in obstruction of justice in the Oval Office" after bombshell reports surfaced Tuesday describing a conversation between the president and the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, James Comey.

According to Gallup, Trump has a 38 percent approval rating and a 57 percent disapproval rating through Sunday.

Donald Trump's approval rating is at a new low - and that's before claims that he disclosed sensitive information to Russian officials in the Oval Office and tried to shut down an FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Slightly more than 4 in 10 (42 percent) registered voters said they approved of Trump, while half said they disapproved. Thirty two percent of survey respondents said they had no opinion of Trump's decision to fire America's chief law enforcement officer. Even more worrying for the Trump administration: Morale is declining among Trump's own base. In the previous poll, 49 percent of Trump voters strongly approved of him.

In his first 114-117 days in the office, Barack Obama was at 64 percent approval, George Bush stood at 56 percent, Bill Clinton had 45 percent, and Trump is at 38 percent.

But 77 per cent of surveyed voters said they do expect the president's press secretaries to always tell the truth, compared to 14 per cent who said that is not one of their expectations.

Trump is also losing support from independents, 50 percent of who disapprove of his performance.

The bad news from Trump was the survey's finding of "a strong preference among people of all political affiliations for a special prosecutor or independent commission, rather than Congress, to take the lead in investigating Russia's involvement in the 2016 election".

But lower tax rates for small businesses and lower- and middle-income Americans could be more popular. Among Republicans, 49% said wealthy Americans pay too little, 21% the right amount, and 19% too much.
