French President-elect Emmanuel Macron begins official duties at WWII ceremony

Ex-French prime minister Manuel Valls has said France's Socialist party "is dead" and he wants to run under the banner of President-elect Emmanuel Macron's political movement in June's parliamentary elections.

Marine Le Pen conceded defeat to Emmanuel Macron in France's presidential election and claimed the mantle as leader of the country's opposition.

There is scepticism about Macron's ability to win a majority with candidates from his En Marche movement - "neither of the left, nor right" - alone, meaning he might have to form a coalition.

"Every support to the president is welcome", said Jean-Paul Delevoye, the president of the commission in charge of assessing candidates.

On Monday, the chief of Macron's movement, Richard Ferrand, said it would modify its name to "Republic on the Move" so as to structure itself more like a traditional party. "His voice is not insignificant, but his candidacy will be treated as anyone else's".

UFC 211 results: Frankie Edgar mauls Yair Rodriguez
Successful with one of his three takedown attempts, Edgar landed 39 of his 54 strike attempts, as opposed to 21 from Rodriguez. Edgar takes the center of the Octagon and in the first exchange of punches it's he who manages to find a home for a couple.

Hamon went on to make a disastrous showing in the presidential election, being eliminated in the first round in fifth place. The poor result has triggered a fierce debate within the Socialists about whether to stick with Hamon's left-wing platform or to switch back to the more centrist views of Valls and his allies. But for the first time in the country's post-war history, the new President does not have a big party machine behind him, with the two main governing parties, the Republicans and Socialists, crashing out in the first round. Macron's 577 candidates are expected to be announced Thursday and Macron himself will be sworn in on Sunday. I'm not living with regrets.

A sea of jubilant supporters waving French flags celebrated outside the Louvre Museum in Paris as the extent of Macron's victory sank in. If so, he'll be able to choose a prime minister.

Nigel Farage, who spearheaded a campaign for Britain's exit from the European Union as former leader of the U.K. Independence Party (UKIP), said the French voters had been tricked by a "giant deceit", claiming Macron "will become [European Commission President Jean-Claude] Juncker's puppet".

Mr Macron is putting together his list of candidates for the legislative elections - a task he has complicated by pledging absolute gender parity and promising that half his candidates will come from outside political circles.
